
Greece: Clashes break out in Athens after peaceful rally marking uprising
Protesters and riot police clashed in Athens' Exarchia district on Tuesday, after a rally marking the 1973 student uprising against the former ruling military junta.
The clashes broke out following a peaceful rally which saw 16,000 people march to the U.S embassy to commemorate the uprising. According to the police, some 200 protesters broke from the rally and began hurling rocks and petrol bombs at officers who retaliated with tear gas and stun grenades. At least five people have been arrested so far.
The 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising protested against the Greek military junta which ruled from 1967-1974.
The uprising began on November 14, before escalating to an open anti-junta revolt that ended in bloodshed in the early morning of November 17. Twenty-four civilians were killed in clashes during the uprising while hundreds were injured.
