UK: IAAF suspends Russian Athletics Federation, confirms President Coe

SOT, Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (English): "That is entirely up to the Russian Federation and the speed with we can enact change."

SOT, Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (English): "It is entirely up to the Russian Federation and Russia to enact those changes. Our verification team will be tough and we will want to make sure that before there is a reintroduction to the sport for their athletes and for the federation that those changes have taken place and not before. It is for the IAAF and no other organisation to make that judgement."

SOT, Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (English): "This is not about politics; this is about the protection of clean athletes. But the message the Council has sent tonight could not be stronger. And I cannot overstate the feeling around the conference call this evening is about sending the strongest possible message that we can."

SOT, Journalist (English): "How does this make you feel?"

SOT, Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (English): "This makes me angry. You know we find ourselves in a shameful position tonight and we need to look at ourselves and we have made that quite clear."

President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Sebastian Coe said “tonight our sport finds itself in a shameful situation,” in London on Friday. His comments come following the suspension of the Russian Athletic Federation from international competitions – including the Olympic Games – for alleged participation in extensive doping. The IAAF members voted 22 to 1 in favour of suspending Russia.

Coe said “this evening is about sending the strongest possible message that we can.” He went on to say “this is a wakeup call for all of us, we need to look at ourselves within our sport, my organisation as well, and we will do that.”

WADA published a report on Monday alleging widespread doping in Russian athletics and accused officials, including Russia's sports minister, of a systematic cover-up. The former WADA chief, Dick Pound, led the 11-month investigation. The conclusions, presented in a 325-page-report, allege doping violations over a period of years, directly encouraged by top officials, with complicity from testing labs and assistance from Russia's security services. Russia's Federal Biomedical Agency has refuted the claims, calling them "baseless."
