Turkey: Shots fired as police arrest pro-Kurdish journalists in Ercis
Police fired shots to disperse a brawl between journalists and law enforcement in the eastern Turkish town of Ercis, Friday, after officers attempted to detain five reporters for trying to cover violent clashes between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and police.
The reporters were set upon while there were waiting with a group of deputies from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Officers approached Idris Yilmaz, a reporter for the pro-Kurdish Dicle News Agency with a warrant for his arrest, prompting the scuffles. Following the gunfire, police went on to detain cameraman from IMC TV Rusen Takva, reporter from IMC TV Bekir Gunes, reporter from Jin News Agency Dildar Atmaca, and journalist Omer Yilmaz, for attempting to report on the clashes earlier in the day.
One non-commissioned officer was killed and three soldiers left injured during the clashes between police and PKK resistance fighters earlier on Friday. Four of the militants were detained during the violence. When reporters and HDP deputies arrived on the scene, police refused them entry to the town.
