Malta: EU to hold refugee crisis talks with Turkey within weeks, says Merkel
Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has promised more help to Turkey in dealing with the refugee crisis, in Valletta on Thursday. The assistance will be offered on a 'step-by-step' basis as the European Union leaders attempt to establish a deal with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Speaking alongside Federal government spokesperson Steffen Seibert, Merkel said that the European Union "will add to the financial means already agreed with Turkey." The chancellor alluded to an upcoming meeting with the Turkish authorities "to negotiate on the migrant crisis," which is scheduled to occur "at the end of November or start of December," according to Merkel.
Earlier on Thursday, EU leaders have agreed in principle to pay Turkey €3 billion ($3.23 billion) over the next two years in return for patrolling the union's southern border and stemming the flow of refugees. The deal was first mooted in October at a gathering of EU leaders on the refugee crisis in Brussels.
