
Russia: Putin discusses environmental investments in the mining and smelting industries
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting in Sochi on Wednesday with Vladimir Potanin, the head of Interros, a company that's one of the key shareholders in MMC Norilsk Nickel.
Speaking about programmes related to Norilsk Nickel, Vladimir Potanin mentioned a “fundamental solution to environmental problems which Norilsk has accumulated over the years."
He said that “investment in environmental projects” as planned in the company's programme until 2020, will amount to “300 billion” roubles.
He also draw Putin’s attention to a governmental programme aimed at encouraging “those who invest, in eliminating the consequences of their activities on the environment,” but stated that there is no such programme for those who “prevent environmental damage."
MMC Norilsk Nickel is a Russian nickel and palladium mining and smelting company. Its largest operations are located in the Norilsk–Talnakh area, in northern Russia.
