UK: Meet ‘Bob’, the first ever ROBOT to give a Ted Talk
A humanoid robot avatar called ‘Bob’ gave the first ever Ted Talk to be delivered by an android in Bristol, Wednesday.
The Bristol Robotics Laboratory, as part of The Being There project, created the prototype system in a bid to let people use the humanoid as a social avatar. The robot has the ability to mimic human movements while relaying the human’s voice and sight. Dr Paul Bremner, lead researcher at Bristol Robotics Laboratory spoke via the robot at the Ted X Bristol, delivering a speech on the capabilities of the new technology.
Bremner rejected the common position that robot developments will be used to man armies and take humans jobs, instead saying robots are generally being designed to carry out "useful" tasks.
