Germany: Hamburg pays tribute to deceased ex-Chancellor of W. Germany Helmut Schmidt
Hundreds of people queued at Hamburg's City Hall to pay their respects to the late former Chancellor of West Germany Helmut Schmidt, in Hamburg on Wednesday.
People left flowers, lit candles and signed a condolence book displayed inside the City Hall. Amid the flowers, cigarette boxes were also seen, as Schmidt was a heavy smoker. Flags were at half-mast as a sign of respect.
Earlier in the day German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President Joachim Gauck paid their respects to Helmut Schmidt at the German Chancellery in Berlin.
Schmidt died on Tuesday at his Hamburg residence after his health deteriorated over the weekend. Schmidt led West Germany through turbulent years, with the militancy from the Red Army Faction (RAF) a challenge for his leadership. The SPD centrist politician is known for his advocacy of free-market policies and laying the foundations for a currency union in Europe through the European Monetary System, which was set-up in 1979.
