Germany: Worries mount over health of former Chancellor Schmidt

The health condition of the former German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, deteriorated over the weekend, according to media reports, quoting reported family sources who have all returned to the family's residence in Hamburg-Langenhorn, Monday.

The doctors say that every scenario is possible at the moment, as the former chancellor is no longer responsive, has high fever and a weak immune system.

The 96-year-old former SPD politician had a serious operation in his leg in September. After remaining at the hospital for two weeks, he then returned to his permanent residency. The deterioration is possibly due to an infection following the operation.

Helmut Schmidt was the fifth German Chancellor from 1974 until 1982.
