Russia: Cancelling Egypt flights 'difficult but timely' - Medvedev

Russian Federation, Moscow
November 9, 2015 at 12:38 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev said the "possibility that it was a terrorist act," referring to the Russian plane crash over the Sinai, prompted the cancellation of flights to Egypt, as he spoke from Moscow, Monday. Medvedev was meeting with journalists from the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper. During the meeting, the Russian prime minister said the decision was "difficult but timely."

Medvedev insisted, however, that there should be no rush to judgement because "consideration of the reasons behind the crash of our aircraft is still ongoing." He believes "the majority of Russian tourists will be taken out of Egypt in the next two weeks. This coincides with the period of their vacation." Despite that, if there are any difficulties, then "if it is necessary, we will send aircraft to evacuate people," the prime minister confirmed.

A total of 224 people died when an Airbus-321 abruptly lost altitude and crashed in the North Sinai Governorate almost 10 days ago. Following moves by the UK and Germany, President Vladimir Putin ordered the suspension of all flights from Russia to Egypt on Friday. The plane broke up in mid-air, prompting mounting speculation that an explosive device was on the plane and was detonated, causing the crash. Investigations are ongoing.
