Croatia: Nationalist HDSSB party holds final rally before general election
The far-right Croatian Democratic Alliance of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSBB) held its last rally in Virovitica, Friday, before Sunday's general election. The rally was led by party founder Branimir Glavas, a former major general who served five years in prison for war crimes committed against Serb civilians in Osijek in 1991 during the Croatian War of Independence.
Among the attendees at the rally were members of the so called "Slavonska Sokolska Garda" (Slavonian Hawk Guard), formed by Glavas, whose members wear black uniforms and serve as a special protection unit for the party.
Parliamentary elections will be held in Croatia on Sunday. According to the latest polls, Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic's Social Democrats are trailing behind the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). Glavas was one of the founding members of the HDZ but split from the party in 2005 to form the HDSSB.
