Russia: First all-female space crew complete eight-day isolation test
Six Russian female scientists completed the "Moon 2015" experiment on Friday, with the participants being forced to remain in a confined space for eight consecutive days in Moscow. The test was designed to simulate an eight-day round trip journey to the moon, reaching lunar orbit before returning to Earth.
The sientists were met by General Director of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) Igor Komarov, who thanked all the participants for a "well conducted" experiment. "You had complicated conditions as well as difficult situations, but you have managed it brilliantly," Komarov stated.
The experiment was held by the Russian Academy of Science’s Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBP) from October 27. The six volunteers were selected from IBP staff with similar medical, physical and physiological characteristics that would be required from a crew travelling to space.
The project was the first isolation experiment involving women in Russia, with the goal of observing the psycho-physiological impact of prolongued space travel on the female body.
