Russia: Patriarch Kirill blesses new Prince Vladimir monument in Moscow
The mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus took part in the ceremonial laying of the first stone of a monument to Prince Vladimir the Great in the Russian capital on Tuesday.
Patriarch Kirill blessed the monument to the first Russian ruler to convert to Christianity. During the ceremony, he said the memorial must “witness our grateful memory, storing in this memory all those who are directly related to the present day.”
Both Patriarch Kirill and Sobyanin were joined by Russia's Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinskiy on Borovitskaya Square in the heart of Moscow.
The exact location of the monument was chosen by a public vote on the Internet which will see the statue erected just a few dozen metres from the walls of the Kremlin.
Vladimir was a prince of the Rurik dynasty who baptised into Christianity in Crimea after consolidating much of what historians call Kievan Rus.
