China: Xi Jinping and Hollande reach climate change consensus

China, Beijing
November 2, 2015 at 17:58 GMT +00:00 · Published

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his French counterpart Francois Hollande agreed that a global climate change pact should include a five-year revision clause in a bid to cut emissions, during a press conference in Beijing on Monday.

Speaking on China’s initiative to battle global climate change, Hollande thanked Xi Jinping for what he called “a major step towards an agreement on the global climate.” He added that the clause was necessary to achieve a global drop in carbon emissions and global warming by the end of the century.

Hollande is travelling with a delegation of 40 French entrepreneurs and several ministers, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Laurent Fabius. Much of the focus of negotiations have been centred on climate change ahead of the UN Summit on Global Warming on November 30 in Paris. Officials from both China and France signed several bilateral agreements in the Chinese capital on Monday.
