
Russia: At least 120 plane crash victims' bodies have been inspected - EMERCOM
The representatives of the EMERCOM branches responsible for the crisis management in the case of the Kogalymavia plane crash reported their plans to Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of Russia Vladimir Stepanov in Moscow on Sunday, one day after the catastrophe. Vladimir Svetelski, Head of EMERCOM's Aviation Technology Department reported that at least 120 bodies of the victims have been inspected so far, but work still needs to be done in “six further morgues.”
An area of 16 square meters around the crash site is currently being combed by EMERCOM teams, Deputy Head of the National Crisis Management Centre Alexei Smirnov reported. The search is expected to be completed at 17:00 Moscow time (15:00 CET; 14:00 GMT). Reporting from Egypt, Vladimir Svetelski said work at the crash site is continuing. One hundred and twenty of the victims' bodies have been inspected in Cairo's main morgue and six more morgues are due to be visited.
The Head of EMERCOM's International Branch informed Stepanov on the Ukrainian and the Belarussian citizens who lost their lives in the crash. "We have established the corresponding cooperation with the Russia's Foreign Ministry, as well as with the Ukrainian and Belarussian embassies. The according letters have been sent," he noted.
Kogalymavia flight 7K9268 is reported to have crashed in Sinai around 23 minutes after take-off. There were a total of 224 people on board - 217 passengers, including 25 children, and seven crew members, with reports indicating that all but five passengers - four Ukrainians and one Belarussian - were Russian. The relatives of the victims are currently being treated by psychologists in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Petersburg.
