Russia: Syrian civilian casualty reports are "propaganda campaign" - Zakharova
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that authorities in Moscow were "indignant" at the "false information concerning civilian victims as a result of Russian military operations in Syria," during a press conference held in Moscow, Thursday.
Zakharova added that the false information had been "thrown into the news by unscrupulous media outlets" before finding its way into the UN report about the humanitarian situation in Syria, adding that "such insinuations, no matter where they come from and however they were spread, bear no relation to the real state of affairs."
"We regard it as part of a propaganda campaign against our country, that is destined to blacken the success of the Russian military's counter-terrorism operation with a failed US-led operation against ISIS in the background," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson continued.
Since launching its air campaign on Syria on September 30 after an official request for aid made by the Syrian government, Russia has flown dozens of combat missions and conducted hundreds of airstrikes, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.
