Germany: Antifa protesters clash with police at HoGeSa counter-demo
Antifa protesters once again clashed with police during protest organised to decry the HoGeSa rally in Cologne, Sunday, after a group of counter-demonstrators moved to Lanxess Arena. Police used water cannon and tried to disperse to protest with force.
The protesters responded by throwing bottles and other objects at police, then reorganised and marched back to Ottoplatz before leaving from the city's main station.
The incident is the latest of many which have broken out in Cologne throughout the day. Earlier police deployed water cannon against the counter-protesters after clashes broke out within the demonstration.
The HoGeSa rally, which reportedly drew 1,000 activists, was organised to oppose the alleged rise of Salafism in Germany. The event will also commemorate the one year anniversary of the massive HoGeSa demonstration that took place in October 2014, when a 4,000-strong rally ended with clashes with police and members of anti-fascist organisations.
