Serbia: Refugees attempt to break police lines as they wait to enter Croatia
Around 2,000 refugees waited at the Berkasovo-Bapska border crossing while waiting to cross into Croatia from the Serbian border town of Berkasovo, Thursday. Following a bout of pushing between the refugees and police, many of whom were young children, authorities began allowing groups of 10 to 20 people through the border crossing every 15 minutes.
Syrian Refugee Mohamed Al Hanid spoke about the situation at the border, stating "we are standing here from the morning, I have six children with me, three women, and we walked all the night to arrive here. It is terrible."
Croatian authorities restricted the massive groups of refugees entering their territory with long queues forming on the Serbian side with many left stranded with young children. The majority of the refugees are likely to spend the night in the cold weather with only tents for shelter and open fires for heat.
A dispute over the handling of refugees has emerged between Serbia and Croatia, with tensions rising after Croatia began turning away vehicles and migrants at its borders, saying it could not cope with the numbers.
