Georgia: Investigation into Georgian-Ossetian "war crimes" is "warranted" - ICC chief prosecutor

Investigations into war crimes that are believed to have taken place during the 2008 Georgian-Ossetian conflict are "warranted," Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda said during a press conference in Tbilisi, Friday.

The ICC has "analysed information from multiple reliable sources including information from the relevant authorities of Georgia and Russia," Bensouda confirmed, before emphasising that ICC officials will "observe" the investigations to "see whether it is being done genuinely."

The 2008 conflict began when Georgian troops invaded the region of South Ossetia and Russian forces responded to support the breakaway region. During the information war that followed, Georgian authorities accused the Russians of starting the conflict. A ceasefire was agreed on August 15, 2008, with Russia officially recognising South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states.
