Hundreds of pro-refugee activists marched through the streets of the German city of Cottbus, Friday, to express solidarity with the refugees arriving in the country. A few hours later a group of about 250 far-right protesters also marched through the city, in opposition to Berlin's policies in relation to the ongoing crisis. A heavy police presence greeted both sets of protesters, with no clashes or major incidents.
The protests come on the same day as German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressing an event of the Young Union of Germany (the youth branch of the CDU/CSU parties) in Hamburg, where she raised the issue of setting up reception centres for refugees in Greece and Italy. The German leader also criticised the Dublin Regulation, calling on the the need for Europe to agree on an improved legal system.
