Germany: VW to recall 2.4 mil cars in Germany alone

Speaking in Berlin on Thursday, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Alexander Dobrindt told press that 2.4 Volkswagen cars will be recalled in order to remove the unauthorised software designed to cheat emissions tests.

"Volkswagen will be forced to remove the unauthorised defeat device software from all vehicles according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority", he said, adding that VW will need to "take the appropriate measures to guarantee emission regulations adherence."

Dobrindt explained that specifically speaking, the software which will be installed for the 2,0 litre Diesel motors needs to be presented to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) before the end of October. He added, that the technical solutions for the 1,6 litre and 1,2 litre motors need to be concretely presented to the KBA before the end of November.

Dobrindt also revealed information about the the start of the product recall, saying that it is "scheduled to start in the beginning of 2016. The KBA will supervise the start and the process of the product recall."

According to Dobrindt, about 2,4 million vehicles are affected in Germany. He called it "a big product recall, however necessary."
