Germany: Arrests made as Antifa meet AfD supporters in Magdeburg
Thousands of Alternative for Germany (AfD) supporters, opposing Berlin’s refugee policy, marched through the city centre of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt region, Wednesday. A counter-protest organised by ‘Refugees Welcome’, which was also thousands-strong according to reports, met the AfD demonstration, resulting in two arrests being made after a bottle was thrown and AfD supporters tried to jump over the metal fence and clash with the anti-fascists.
The AfD participants carried German flags and chanted slogans against German Chancellor Angela Merkel. There was a large police presence on hand at the march in a bid to prevent the AfD supporters from clashing with the counter-protesters, which was largely successful despite the broken bottle that led to the arrests.
