Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on Thursday that "the average salary of a teacher at school exceeded the average income in the country," as he spoke at the Teacher of the Year meeting in Sochi. Putin stated the teachers earn "eight percent" more than the average Russian worker.

Putin said that in 2005 the average salary was 6,500 roubles” (€93/$105) while now teachers get what “amounted to 35,000 roubles (€500/$563)." The Russian leader conceded that "the difference is quite palpable from region to region," but maintained "this number is still above the average [salary]." He said also that "I do understand that money is never enough and this [figures] shall not be the limit but it remains objective data."

The annual contest of Teacher of the Year is organised by the Ministry of Education and Science to promote good teaching practices. It also seeks to boost techniques for teachers to share their experience in the profession, as well as raising its prestige.
