UN: Steinmeier calls on all involved in Syria conflict resolution to unite

United Nations, New York City
October 1, 2015 at 08:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

Common efforts of all actors involved in the Syrian conflict are needed to resolve the crisis in the country, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during his speech at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Thursday, adding that differences between the actors should be put aside.

Instead of "lone decisions," Russia should push for a political process "advocating transition," Steinmeier said commenting on the recent airstrikes by the Russian military in Syria. "That would be an important contribution towards overcoming the stalemate, for this stalemate is a lethal one," the German minister stated.

He went on to slam the underfunding of UN relief agencies and announced that during a G7 meeting this week, $1.8 billion (€1.61 billion) have been raised to support organizations like UNHCR, the World Food Programme, UNWRA and OCHA.

Steinmeier concluded his statement promising that Germany will continue contributing to world peace and security whilst remembering its hostile past. "In this age of globalisation, some say the world has become a village. If that it so, esteemed colleagues, then we're all neighbours, in which case I would advise us to act as good neighbours."
