
China: Is the ancient profession of ear-cleaning dying? It seems not
Customers received a deep clean of their ear canals from professional earwax removal masters in the teeming streets of central Chengdu on Thursday. The ancient practice of ear wax removal remains popular amongst locals in the provincial Chinese capital, where it is credited with being both pleasurable and hygienic.
Street tradesmen use up to eight selected tools to scrupulously deep clean customer’s ear canals in the ancient tradition, which has lasted for centuries. However, due to a lack of young disciples taking after their predecessors the trade may be in decline.
Recently at least 30 ear-cleaning aficionados from Chengdu signed a petition in hope of propagating the profession and turning it into a cultural heritage.
