Russia: Russian presence in Syria 'absolutely necessary to fight terrorism' - Riad Haddad

Russian Federation, Moscow
October 1, 2015 at 03:14 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic Riad Haddad in Moscow, Thursday, speaking during a press conference criticised the US-led coalition campaign on failing to defeat Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) and spoke on the Russian air force’s efficiency after a day of bombing IS targets.

The Syrian diplomat said that "I would like to thank the Russian government, the Russian people and first of all President Putin for his stance, for his assistance and his will to act in compliance with UN chart and international law" and added that "I would like to quote Mr Putin who said yesterday that Russia now sends its forces to fight terrorists before terrorists come to Russia."

The Syrian diplomat spoke on the necessity to form a joint coalition plan by saying that “we have seen that the forces that are trying to counter terrorists are able to win a victory on the terrorists should act together, should join the efforts and should cooperate with the Syrian army led by Bashar Assad, the commander and chief of the Syrian Army and so Russian military presence is absolutely necessary to fight terrorism in compliance with international law."

Russia announced that it had conducted its first airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, successfully hitting IS targets. Prior to the strikes Russia's Federation Council gave its consent for the use of the Russian armed forces abroad at a closed-doors meeting. The consent does not include the use of ground forces. The move follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's UN General Assembly speech in which he called for an alliance against IS.
