Italy: Police clear migrant camp on border with France
Italian police moved to clear a camp of migrants, refugees and activists near the Italian town of Ventimiglia on the border with France on Wednesday.
The camp of around 50 people had been in place since earlier in the year, with most migrants seeking to cross into France and continue on their way to desired destinations in northern Europe.
Ventimiglia is one of several European migrant flashpoints as divisions have grown between European countries over how to handle the hundreds of thousands of people coming to the region fleeing conflict and persecution, the majority of them from Syria.
According to UNHCR figures, Italy is currently host to an estimated 129,000 new arrivals, while the United Nations (UN) estimate that around 2,400 people have lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean this year.
