Yemen: Aden oil refinery reopens six months after capture by Houthi forces

The Aden Oil Refinery Co reopened their plant, Monday, six months after it was captured by Houthi forces. Said Mouhammed, Chief of Repairs Unit at the refinery, said the damage was caused “as a result of the aggressions of war on Aden and the rest of the country, by the vile Houthi forces.”

The refinery, which has the capacity to produce up 150,000 barrels of oil per-day, was captured by Houthi forces on March 26. Production at the plant subsequently ceased as it became the site of intense fighting between Houthis and Yemeni forces loyal to ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and their international allies.

The Saudi-led coalition, which seeks to restore the government of Hadi and displace the Houthi fighters, includes eight other Arab states and is receiving logistical support from the United States, Britain and France. Some 2,600 civilians have died in the last six months, according to UN figures. A further 300,000 civilians have been internally displaced because of the airstrikes, with 27,000 Yemeni residents forced to flee the country.
