Yemen: After deadly wedding attack, Yemenis call for international support

Yemen, Sanaa

Residents in Sanaa slammed the Saudi-led coalition carrying out airstrikes in Yemen and called for international support to end the conflict, Tuesday. At least 131 people were confirmed dead on Tuesday after one of the deadliest attacks, widely attributed to Saudi Arabian-led coalition forces, hit a wedding party in the village of Al-Wahijah on Monday night.

One resident named Mohamed Al Atab criticised Saudi Arabia for carrying out a genocidal war in Yemen. "Saudi Arabia's war continues to claim more innocent lives and what happened in Mocha is just one of these incidents and Yemen is witnessing on a daily basis genocidal war. We say to the international community: until when are you going to keep your silence? Yemeni people are killed on a daily basis. Please take a serious action and put an end to this war," he said. Another resident in Sanaa described the airstrike as a "heinous crime by the Saudi regime that has never happened before in history."

The spokesperson of the Saudi-led coalition, Brigadier-General Ahmed al-Asseri, denied claims that an airstrike hit the wedding. However, eyewitness reports state that two aerial strikes were carried out - the first hitting the female section, the second striking the area where the men were congregating. Houthi fighters are not known to have been anywhere near the location of the wedding.

The Saudi-led coalition, which seeks to restore the government of former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and displace the Houthi rebels, includes eight other Arab states and is receiving logistical support from the United States, Britain and France. Some 2,200 civilians have died in the last six months, according to UN figures. A further 300,000 civilians have been internally displaced because of the airstrikes, with 27,000 Yemeni residents forced to flee the country.
