USA: Protesters demand justice for Akai Gurley as Officer Liang returns to court

United States, Brooklyn

Around a dozen protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court in Brooklyn in support of the family of Akai Gurley on Tuesday, as the NYPD officer charged in his killing was expected to appear in court. Twenty-eight-year old Gurley, who was unarmed, was killed ten months ago in the darkened stairwell of his Brooklyn apartment block when a bullet fired by police officer Peter Liang ricocheted off a wall and struck him in the chest.

Liang has been charged with a range of offences linked to the shooting to which he has pleaded not guilty. The Gurley family, supported by Black Lives Matter activists outside court, has called for the officer to be held accountable.

Gurley's killing attracted major activist and media attention due to its timing in relation to other recent controversial police killings of African-American men including Michael Brown in Ferguson and Eric Garner also in New York. The "Black Lives Matter" movement born in the wake of those incidents has pushed the issue of state violence against African Americans into the US political mainstream.
