UN: Putin blames NATO expansionism for Ukraine conflict

United Nations, New York City
September 28, 2015 at 17:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed NATO's policy of expansionism for the Ukraine conflict during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Monday.

"First they continued their policy of expanding NATO, although the Warsaw Pact stopped its existence and the Soviet Union had collapsed. And nevertheless, NATO does not only stay, but continues expanding itself as well as its military infrastructure. Then they offered poor Soviet countries a false choice - either to be with the West or the East. Sooner or later, this logic of confrontation was bound to spark off a serious geopolitical crisis. This is exactly what happened in Ukraine," the Russian leader stated.

Putin also said that the deadlock in Ukraine could only be resolved through the implementation of the Minsk agreements. "We are convinced that only through a full and faithful implementation of the Minsk agreements of February 12, 2015 we can overcome the bloodshed and find a way out of the deadlock. Ukraine's territorial integrity cannot be established by the use of force and arms - and this needs to be done," Putin stated, adding that "what is needed is the genuine consideration of the rights and interests of the people in Donbass and respect for their choice. There is a need to coordinate with them the key elements of the political structure, as provided for by the Minsk agreements."

Discussing Western sanctions against Russia, Putin said that they were "not only politically motivated, but also serve as a tool to remove competitors from the market."
