UN: Ecological crisis could end humanity - Pope tells General Assembly

United Nations, New York City
September 25, 2015 at 13:56 GMT -00:00 · Published

Pope Francis warned the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) of the twin threats to humanity of the "ecological crisis" and nuclear weapons, in New York, Friday. The Pope was introduced by UN General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon on the organisation's 70th anniversary.

The pontiff alerted that the "large-scale destruction of bio-diversity can threaten the very existence of the human species." The Argentine went on, calling for humanity to respect the "right to the environment," and asserting that "Man does not create himself. He is spirit and will, but also nature."

As well as climate change, the Pope was keen to outline another terminal threat to mankind - the proliferation of nuclear weapons. "There is urgent need to work for a world free of nuclear weapons, in full application of the non-proliferation," stated the Pope. With this in mind, he went on to praise the Iran nuclear deal, saying that it is an example of "the potential of political good will and of law, exercised with sincerity, patience and constancy." The endorsement will come as a major boost to US President Barack Obama who has faced opposition from foreign policy hard-liners for striking the deal.

During his visit to New York, the Pope is also expected to lead an evening prayer at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, to attend a multi-faith service event at the World Trade Centre 9/11 Memorial and Museum. He is also set to visit a Catholic school in East Harlem and hold an evening Mass at Madison Square Garden.
