Russia: Putin speaks out against IS at opening of the Moscow Cathedral Mosque

Russian Federation, Moscow
September 23, 2015 at 10:25 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out against ISIS and in praise of a “multi-religious” Russia at the opening ceremony of the Moscow Cathedral Mosque in the north of the city on Wednesday.

Addressing the audience at the event, Putin congratulate them "with all his heart” for the new mosque. He underlined that Russia had always been "a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country,” and described the “mutual enrichment of cultures, traditions and religions” as being “the originality and strength of our common homeland.”

The Russian leader also stated how the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) is “compromising Islam” and that “their ideology is built on lies.” He said that this extremist group “sow (s) hatred, kill (s) people, including priests, and barbarously destroy (s) the monuments of world culture.”

Prominent Muslim leaders travelled to Moscow for the opening ceremony including the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas.

The mosque, also known as Moscow Jum'ah Mosque and Moscow Central Mosque, was demolished four years ago and has been rebuilt to accommodate 10,000 people. After the reopening, held on the eve of Eid al Adha (known in Russia as Kurban Bairam), the temple has become a new complex 20 times larger than its predecessor at 19,000 square meters (204,500 square feet).

Muslims make up roughly 14 percent of Russia’s population and about 300,000 of them live in Moscow. The new mosque, which will be the seventh in Moscow, is expected to help decongest other mosques in the city, which are inundated by the capital’s growing Muslim population. Muslim clerics are negotiating with the city authorities to build another large mosque outside the Moscow Ring Road.
