Belgium: Greek and Italian borders should be secured - Austria's Mikl-Leitner
Austrian Federal Minister for the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner said that EU member states "should secure external borders in Italy and Greece too, it should be our main priority," ahead of the meeting at the Justus Lex building in Brussels, Tuesday.
Federal Minister for the Interior of Germany Thomas de Maiziere, said that today's Extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council isn't about the "distribution" of refugees, but rather about how to "prevent many more from coming," De Maiziere, stated that Europe needs "solution for limiting the influx [of refugees and migrants] to Europe" and to organise the "deportations from Europe."
Europe's interior ministers are set to decide on the proposal of the European Commission for the emergency relocation of 120,000 refugees from member states exposed to the massive migratory influx, mainly Italy, Greece and Hungary.
This meeting is taking place one day earlier than the emergency meeting of heads of state or government, which is scheduled for Wednesday. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, called the EU leaders in an attempt to reach consensus on the overall approach to the refugee's crisis and on the European migration policy. However, it has turned difficult, as some member states, above all the countries from the Visegrad Four group (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) have voiced an opposition to refugees quotas.
