Croatia: Slovenian police pepper spray refugee at Harmica border
Slovenian police used pepper spray after a man tried to break through the border fence in Harmica on Sunday. The escalations led to altercations between the migrants and refugees and with the police. Many in the crowd attempted to calm down the situation, negotiating and mediating tensions.
The disturbances preceded the arrival of modes of transport, with the first bus arriving to take males who had been separated from their families on Saturday, when their partners and children were allowed transit through Slovenia. The second bus to arrive took entire families, amidst emotional scenes.
Some Croatians brought food and drink to the border crossing to assist those stuck in limbo. Authorities have also sent bio-medical teams to ensure that sanitary conditions are maintained.
Croatia closed seven of its eight road border crossings with Serbia, after more than 11,000 refugees and migrants entered the country since Wednesday, following Hungary's move to close its borders on Tuesday. Croatia is seeking to transfer many to Slovenia, who have offered immediate humanitarian care and shelter for 5,000 migrants and refugees.
