Greece: 'Greeks must take their future in own hands' - Tsipras
Former Greek Prime Minister and leader of Syriza Alexis Tsipras called on Greeks "to take their future in their own hands" speaking to journalists at a polling station in Athens after voting, Sunday. Tsipras said that today's elections "will stamp the new era" adding that peoples vote "will give a mandate for a strong government with a four year plan."
New Democracy are polled as coming a close second behind Syriza. A rise in the percentage of the vote for the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and the far-right Golden Dawn party is also forecast. Electoral surveys indicate that as many as ten million voters remain undecided, or may not vote at all. This will be the third time in the last eight months that Greeks have been called to the polls to cast their votes, after the legislative elections in January and the referendum.
Polling stations opened today at 07:00 local time (05:00 GMT) and will close at 19:00 (17:00 GMT). First results are expected between 21:00 and 21:30 local time (between 19:00 and 19:30 GMT).
