Johannes Hahn, the European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, visited a refugee reception centre on the Greek-Macedonian border at Gevgelija, Macedonia, on Saturday. During his visit the Austrian politician spoke with refugees living in the centre, United Nations aid workers and medical staff.

The commissioner is currently visiting Macedonia as part of a diplomatic mission in which he will meet with government and opposition politicians as part of ongoing negotiations on the accession of the former Yugoslav Republic to the European Union.

The Balkan country has this summer been the front-line of the refugee and migrant crisis in Europe, as one of the key transit countries for those fleeing the Middle East to seek asylum in Western European countries.
