Brazil: Thousands rally in Sao Paulo against government and main opposition party
A range of organisations and trade unions marched in Sao Paulo, Friday, to protest against both the current Dilma Rousseff-led government in Brasilia as well as the Aecio Neves-led opposition Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).
Thousands of protesters marched through the city under the slogan 'Make the rich pay for the crisis' demanding "fiscal adjustment for workers" and defending public education. Many of the protesters carried the flag of the United Socialist Workers' Party (PSTU), a Trotskyist organisation belonging to the International Workers League.
The protests, which were part of a nationwide protest movement against Dilma Rousseff's government, were initially sparked by a corruption scandal in the state oil company Petrobras. Construction and engineering companies allegedly bribed the company with at least $800 million (€745 million). Many protesters claim that Rousseff must have known about the scandal, calling for the privatisation of the company.
