Turkey: Thousands march for national unity in Ankara
Thousands took to the streets of Ankara in a peace-march on Thursday, in response to growing violence between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK).
Demonstrators carried a huge Turkish flag as they marched under the slogan “no to terrorism, yes to brotherhood.” The rally was organised by numerous Turkish workers unions, though did not involve the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Union leaders urging national unity addressed the crowd, following a march through Ankara’s streets.
Security is on high-alert as violence has escalated between the Turks and Kurds in recent weeks. Last week hundreds of Kurdish civilians were injured in violent demonstrations across Western Turkey, as Turkish nationalists took to the streets following a series of attacks by Kurdish fighters on the army and police force.
