Germany: Kurdish activists rally in Hamburg in solidarity with PKK
Hundreds of Kurdish people and supporters of Kurdish self-determination and the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), along with members of the German Antifa movement, gathered in the St. Georg district of Hamburg as tension with Turkish nationalists continues to rise in Germany, Sunday.
Protesters held a banner reading both in German and Kurdish "shoulder by shoulder against fascism". The also waved PKK flags with the face of its imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan, along with People's Democratic Party (HDP) and Anti-Fascist Action flags. Some staged traditional Kurdish dances.
Heavily armoured police officers and police units were deployed in the area, including police horses and water-cannon-equipped anti-riot trucks.
At the same time, a separate demonstration of Turkish nationalists took place at Hamburg Central Station, to show their support for the Turkish government and the military operation being carried out against Kurdish fighters near the border with Syria.
