Austria: Police close border with Hungary for "security" reasons
Austrian authorities decided to close its border with Hungary after thousands of migrants and refugees arrived in the small Austrian border town of Nickelsdorf, in the Burgenland municipality, on their way to Vienna and Salzburg on Friday.
In order to prevent the refugee flow police have installed a border fence. Motorway connections with Hungary will remain closed over the weekend for security reasons, police said.
At least 3,000 people crossed the Hungarian-Austrian border 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Vienna by noon on Friday. On Thursday, 10,000 asylum seekers are believed to have made the crossing.
In response to the amount of people coming into the country, Austria cut its rail link to Hungary, with authorities citing a "massive overburdening" of its capacity due to the influx of people. The train line shall remain closed over the weekend.
