Greece: Thousands of refugees arrive in Athens from over-capacity Lesbos

Greece, Lesbos
September 10, 2015 at 21:08 GMT +00:00 · Published

An estimated 2,000 migrants and refugees arrived at Piraeus port in Athens aboard a ferry, Thursday, travelling from the Greek island of Lesbos, with one of three ferries taking almost 5000 migrants from the over-strained island to the capital.

Greece, one of the main entry points for asylum seekers attempting to settle within the European Union, continues to struggle with the large numbers of people fleeing to the country. From Athens, the refugees are expected to travel further into northern Europe, with many hoping to reach Germany and other Western European states that have recently opened up their doors to Syrian refugees.

Tensions have been high in Lesbos after thousands of refugees attempted to embark on the ferries bound for Athens. Thousands were left waiting at Mytilene port on the eastern Greek island, hoping to catch one of the three ships chartered by Greek authorities to transfer them to the capital. Greek authorities have warned of widespread chaos on the island, which is hosting over 15,000 refugees in Mytilene alone. The island has an estimated population of 85,000 locals.

According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) figures, Greece alone has received 124,000 asylum seekers and refugees in 2015, mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. An estimated 50,000 people arrived in July alone, putting enormous pressure on the country.
