Russia: 'Mechanical approach' to solving refugee crisis won't work - Lavrov

Russian Federation, Moscow

A "mechanical approach" to solving the refugee crisis in Europe is inappropriate said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting with European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Kristalina Georgieva in Moscow, Tuesday.

"The difference between the number of people who need humanitarian aid from the one side and the availability of funds from the other is constantly growing," Lavrov said, adding that "there is a temptation to simply sit back and reckon how much money is needed and make recommendations that the government allots additional funds, and I’ve even heard that someone has suggested making this mandatory." Russia's top diplomat criticised this approach saying "this mechanical approach will not work. You must understand better than anyone given the example of the EU's attempt to solve the migrant problem in a similar way."

Lavrov went on to say that the countries guilty of provoking a crisis in the Middle East, notably with regards to the ongoing civil war in Syria, have more of a responsibility to refugees and humanitarian aid. "It is difficult to consider this situation and walk away from the need to analyse the causes of the additional flows of migrants and other people who need humanitarian aid. Justice requires that countries which are guilty in the outbreak of conflict are more responsible for the donation of humanitarian aid," Russia's foreign minister concluded.
