Belgium: Farmers start fires as they descend on EC HQ in Brussels
Hundreds of tractors blocked the roads outside the headquarters of the European Council and European Commission headquarters, on Monday, as farmers from across Europe gathered to protest the European Unions' agriculture policy. Riot police watched on from behind barbed wire barricades as the demonstration took place which involved fires being lit and attendees listening to music. Protesters held signs reading "I am a farmer" and "your policy ruins dairy farmers - give us our lives back!"
The demonstration is one of many that have occurred in Belgium, France and Spain among other European countries in recent weeks. The protesters are rallying against the decrease on prices of agricultural goods and the large amount of norms, taxes and bureaucracy they have to face, which according to their view, is undermining their competitiveness compared to other EU countries.
