Germany: Merkel holds six-hour-long crisis meeting over migrant influx

Germany, Berlin

German Chancellor Angela Merkel held an emergency meeting to discuss Europe's migrant crisis with her coalition partners in Berlin, Sunday.

Foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and economy minister Sigmar Gabriel were among those who attended the meeting at the Kanzleramt. The meeting lasted six and a half hours, beginning at 19:00 and finishing at 01:30 CET.

The meeting was held as thousands of refugees streamed into the country over the weekend,

travelling from Hungary via Austria following Merkel's decision to declare Germany's suspension of the Dublin Regulation. The regulation states that migrants can only claim asylum in the country they first enter on EU territory; they could face deportation should they try any other country. However, Germany is now permitting officers to process applications of asylum seekers even if they travelled through other EU countries first.

On Saturday some 7,000 people registered their arrival in Munich, while trains went on to transport hundreds to Franfurt, Dortmund and Dresden. Authorities estimate that up to 800,000 people could apply for asylum in Germany by the end of the year.
