USA: Invest in jobs and education not jails and incarceration - Bernie Sanders

United States, Tama, Iowa

Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders visited the Meskwaki Tribal Centre in Tama, Iowa, on Friday to address supporters during his two-day campaign tour of the state.

Sanders discussed a range of topics during his speech including wealth inequality, scarcity of jobs and the cost-intensive education system in the United States. "What happens when you have five and a half million young people, high school graduates who have no jobs and are not in school, what happens to those kids? They often get into trouble. And that is one of the reasons why we have so many people in jail. In my view, I would much rather invest in jobs and education for these kids than in jails and incarceration," the Democratic candidate said, adding that "every public college and university should be tuition free."

During his campaign trail Sanders has become a leading voice on issues connected with social justice, such as income inequality, racial justice and climate change, and has been particularly critical of the mass surveillance policies carried out by US government. He has also called for elections to be financed from the public purse, which he says would allow anyone to seek office rather than just those who carry favour from the wealthy.
