USA: Obama and Saudi King Salman hold joint presser ahead of meeting

United States, Washington D.C.
September 4, 2015 at 20:57 GMT +00:00 · Published

US President Barack Obama held a joint press conference with Saudi King Salman in Washington D.C., Friday. Later in the day both leaders will hold a bilateral meeting to discuss a range of issues including the Iran nuclear deal, the Syrian conflict and the situation in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition, supported by the United States, is carrying out airstrikes against Houthi forces.

During the presser, Obama noted the key issues on the agenda for the meeting. "We share concern about Yemen, and we need to restore a functioning government that is inclusive and that can relieve the humanitarian situation there. We share concern about the crisis in Syria and we will have the option to discuss how we can arrive at a political transition process within Syria that can finally end the horrific conflict there," Obama said.

Discussing the Iran nuclear deal, Obama stated that both he and the Saudi king will consider "the importance of effectively implementing the deal to ensure that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon, while counteracting its destabilising activities in the region." The US president also noted that the US and Saudi Arabia "continue to cooperate extremely closely in countering terrorist activities in the region and around the world including the battle against ISIL."

The trip to Washington D.C. marks Salman's first official visit to the USA since he ascended to the throne in January.
