Ukraine: NATO continues conducting joint military drills in Black Sea

Ukraine, Odessa
September 4, 2015 at 14:02 GMT +00:00 · Published

Ukrainian frigate "Hetman Sahaidachni" and the U.S. missile destroyer "Donald Cook" conducted joint training in the north-western part of the Black Sea in Odessa as part of the "Sea Breeze 2015" military drills, Friday.

The ongoing military exercises are focused on maritime and regional security. NATO and Ukrainian forces shared medical aid skills as well as strategies in resisting attacks from pirates.

"We are here in the Black Sea to conduct these excercises, to work together with our ally partners and friends in the hope to encourage stability and security in the Black Sea," Navy Captain Richard Dromerhauzer said as he addressed the forces. "The Black Sea is very important to all our partners and we hope to build a common experience and really work on regional security not a specific event," he added.

This year's NATO naval exercises kicked off on September 1 in Ukraine's Odessa and Nikolaev regions and involve up to 2,500 troops and some 150 military vehicles. Other participating navies include those from Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Moldova, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The exercises run until mid September.

Joint US-Ukrainian navy drills in the Black Sea send the wrong signal, the Russian Foreign Ministry's official spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. Approved recently by the country's National Security and Defense Council, for the first time in its history Kiev now officially defines Russia as the nation's "enemy and aggressor."
