Russia: Putin talks Far East development at first Eastern Economic Forum

Russian Federation, Vladivostok

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an address at the first ever Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Friday. During the speech Putin discussed both the history of development in the Far East and current government plans to generate further expansion in the region.

"Russia's advancement towards its Pacific borders is the result of the great work and courage of many generations of our ancestors," Putin said.

Discussing current plans to develop the Far East, Putin discussed the government plan to provide land in the region for free to Russian citizens who wish to set up businesses there. "In the Far East we are creating additional opportunities for our citizens who wish to start their own business - by this I mean farms, manufacturing and industry in general. I'm talking about the government's proposal to provide citizens of Russia with plots of land up to one hectare in the Far East for free," the Russian President stated, adding that "the practical realisation of this project should start in 2016 already. I hope this also will contribute to the development of huge expanses of the Far East and attract new residents to the region."

The Eastern Economic Forum opened its doors on Thursday with a view to boosting the development of fully-fledged economic cooperation between Eurasian states. A total of 32 contracts were signed, following dozens roundtable sessions, with an expected 72 agreements to be signed by the end of the event. The forum is specifically dedicated to attracting investment in the far eastern regions of Russia.
