Italy: Refugee gives birth on Coast Guard ship after being picked up in Med
A woman gave birth on an Italian Coast Guard ship on Wednesday shortly after she was picked up along with 104 other refugees off the Libyan coast in the Mediterranean Sea.
The refugees were floating in a vessel off the north coast of Libya when the CP 906 Italian Coast Guard ship intercepted them. All 105 migrants were then transported to the CP 319 and CP 324 Coast Guard of Lampedusa patrol boats. The woman gave birth on the CP 324 patrol boat with the assistance of the medical staff on board. The Italian Coast Guard then took the refugees along with their new passenger to the port of Lampedusa. Both the mother and child were taken to hospital after they arrived at the Italian port and are believed to be healthy and in good condition.
Over 100,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean and landed on European shores in 2015 alone, with southern Europe seeing the majority of arrivals. Italy is currently host to an estimated 60,000 new arrivals, a number rivalled only by the 48,000 migrants who have arrived in Greece this year.
