USA: Atlas V 551 rocket launches US Navy's fourth MUOS satellite
The United Launch Alliance (ULA) launched the US Navy’s fourth Mobile User Objective System (MUOS-4) satellite on an Atlas V 551 rocket, at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, on Wednesday. Footage shows the launch from the Space Launch Complex-41.
MUOS-4 will provide new secure communications capabilities, the US military says, including smartphone-like simultaneous voice and video and data, to connect the US armed forces around the globe.
Previous missions launched aboard the Atlas V 551 include three MUOS missions as well as the New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Juno mission to Jupiter. The MUOS satellite was built by American aerospace, defence and security company Lockheed Martin.
MUOS is a group of five planned communications satellites designed to provide tactical mobile communications to the US military. ULA reportedly plans to launch the final MUOS satellite within the next year to complete the constellation.
